We’ve all heard the song, “Deck the halls.” A song that’s sung throughout the Christmas season and goes something like this; “Deck the halls with boughs of holly, Fa la la la, la la la la la! ‘Tis the season to be jolly, Fa la la la la, la la la la!” If you just sang that out loud, it may not go exactly like that. LOL!
I always wondered what the word “boughs” meant. The meaning of boughs according to Webster is the main branch of a tree. Generally speaking the boughs or branches are blossoming with leaves. So in the Christmas carol “Deck the Halls” is simply saying cover the walls with boughs of holly or leaves.
This brings to mind in the book of John where Jesus tells us that we are the branches and He is the vine. “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5)
If Jesus is the vine, our source of everlasting life and we are His branches, we have the power to bear much fruit. When our branches are leafless, people don’t have anything worth seeing. When our branches are leafy, people will see Jesus living in us. The goal here is to stay rooted in Jesus so we bear much fruit.
Fa la la la la, la la la la!
